This past winter, members of the Community Based Day Supports (CBDS) program visited and rated 127 beaches on Cape. They covered beaches on lakes, ponds, the ocean, Nantucket Sound, and Cape Cod Bay.
Individuals walked on every beach and rated them for selected criteria, which included scenic beauty of the beaches, the quality of the waves, the texture of the sand, and the extras like snacks, bathroom, changing rooms, showers, and water bubblers. We had to spend at least 10 minutes on every beach, so some days our walks were particularly chilly but brisk!
At the end of the season, we voted on the best beaches on Cape Cod and the results were as follows:
Coast Guard and Marconi Beaches for the ocean
West Dennis Beach for Nantucket Sound
Herring Cove, Sandy Neck and Ellis Landing for the bay side
Gull Pond for the ponds and lakes

Beaches that stood out in terms of accessibility were Coast Guard, Nauset, Craigville, Kalmus and Veterans, Race Point, West Dennis, Dowses, and Covell.
Members of CBDS thoroughly enjoyed exploring and rating all the beaches. We visited many areas where few of us had ever been. All of the people who visited the beaches decided to do this again next year as one of our winter group activities.
Even on a cold winter’s day, beaches on Cape Cod are beautiful.
