A most common question

What are you going to do after highschool ?

That’s a question all of our children hear at graduation time. Most are able to tell you which college they’re planning to attend. Others know when and where they’ll start their first full-time job. But, if you are a teenager with disabilities, there are frequently no easy answers to this seemingly simple question about post-high school activities.

Now, with assistance from Cape Abilities, students with disabilities have the opportunity to create a plan for their future and make those exciting decisions about their career path.

Cape Abilities’ Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) program provides education and training in the areas of Job Exploration, Workplace Readiness, Work Based Learning Experience, Self-Advocacy and Post-Secondary Education to students with disabilities from age 14-21 (up to their 22nd birthday).

In order to pave the way for employment and to be more marketable in the competitive workforce, the Pre-ETS program provides opportunities for students to refine their work habits and job readiness skills, receive individualized support on resume building and interviewing approaches and also obtain valuable work experience with community businesses.

The Virtual Job Shadow application provides us the ability to quickly and easily add our own lessons.

The Virtual Job Shadow application allows us to not only take advantage of built-in materials and lessons, but provides us the ability to quickly and easily add our own lessons that are tailored to each of our students’ personal interests. Currently, the Pre-ETS program is servicing twenty students through our online training model, and their reaction to these learning activities has exceeded expectations.

While it can be a challenge to coordinate ‘classrooms’ via ZOOM, our program participants are creating engaging and enriching opportunities to build profiles of interest that allow online trainers like Virtual Job Shadow to focus solely on those goals.
