In 2012, Chris and Ron found Cape Abilities Farm almost by accident.
They had just retired—Ron after 40 years as an educator, and Chris from a career in the medical field. They were looking for something meaningful to fill their time.
At a “Meet Your Local Farmer” event, they picked up a brochure.
They’ve been here ever since.
Back then, the Farm was simple. A small stand, no running water, and a lot of potential.
On their first day, they were given zinnia seeds and told to plant one per space. No one told them when to stop. So, they didn’t.
Hundreds turned into thousands. Each one needed to be transplanted. They still laugh about it today. But what kept them coming back wasn’t the work. It was the people.
At the Farm, the individuals we support lead, teach, and take pride in what they grow every day. Chris and Ron saw that early on. Instead of stepping in, they stepped back. They made space for individuals to guide the work and take ownership.
Over the years, they’ve watched that confidence grow. They’ve seen individuals become leaders in the greenhouse, forming friendships and building skills along the way. “It feels like home,” they say.
During National Volunteer Week, we’re reminded how vital volunteers like Chris and Ron are to this community.
Today, the Farm is stronger than ever. It is expanding access to fresh food and creating more opportunities for individuals of all abilities to contribute and belong.
That impact is only possible because of people like Chris and Ron.
