Celebrating Dedication: Cape Abilities Team Honored by the Coast Guard

This past October, Cape Abilities had the privilege of being recognized by the United States Coast Guard for the exceptional work of our team at Joint Base Cape Cod. This well-deserved recognition highlights the dedication and professionalism of the 10 individuals, alongside Contract Manager Jutta, Lead Worker Muriel, and our two part-time linens staff, Chris and Tiareiti, who make up our Cape Abilities team.

Supported by federally funded contracts administered through Source America, this program creates meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, fostering skill-building and career development. Since its inception in 1994, the program has expanded to include vital services such as linen cleaning, recycling, maintenance in 21 buildings, and specialized tasks like carpet cleaning and floor work.

Our Cape Abilities team completes critical daily tasks to keep Joint Base Cape Cod running smoothly. From maintaining high standards in building cleanliness to ensuring efficient recycling processes, their contributions are invaluable. The team also uses 95% green cleaning products, demonstrating a commitment to environmentally friendly practices.

The Coast Guard recognition is a testament to nearly three decades of dedication. Since the initial contract in 1994, Cape Abilities has grown this program to include various responsibilities. In 2016, the recycling program was launched and now covers 26 buildings. By 2022, maintenance services had expanded to 21 buildings, and the team continues to provide expertise in commercial carpet cleaning and floor care. This progress reflects the hard work, safety skills, and independence of our team members.

The Cape Abilities crew brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to their roles. Team members like Bobby Davis, who has served for 27 years, and Michael Swierz, with 21 years of service, embody the dedication that drives our success. Newer members, like Troy Gauthier, who joined just four months ago, are already making a positive impact. Each individual plays a vital role in ensuring the success of this program.

The success of this program wouldn’t be possible without the leadership of our dedicated staff. Contract Manager Jutta ensures operations run smoothly, Lead Worker Muriel oversees daily tasks and quality control, and linens staff Chris and Tiareiti provide specialized support for linen services. Transportation logistics, compliance with OSHA and safety standards, and quality control processes are also key components of the program, ensuring both excellence and security on the base.

The recognition from the Coast Guard serves as a reminder of the power of inclusion. By providing individuals with disabilities the opportunity to work in meaningful, skill-building roles, this program showcases what can be achieved when people are given the tools and support, they need to succeed.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are excited to continue our partnership with the Coast Guard and other federal agencies. Together, we are building a more inclusive future—one where meaningful employment opportunities are accessible to everyone.
