Individuals in our Community Based Day Supports (CBDS) program recently participated in an educational and fun activity with our friends at the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension: Seedling to Salad!
The engaging afternoon began with a hands-on salad demonstration, where individuals helped Cape Cod Cooperative Extension’s Sue Bourque combine fresh baby Swiss chard, homemade croutons, lemon, parmesan, and more into a healthy and nutritious afternoon snack.
Then, individuals had the opportunity to learn about the journey of their salad from its first step as a seedling, all the way to the plate. The afternoon culminated in the planting of seedling gardens, and individuals were able to take them with them to continue to watch their future salad grow.
Partnerships with local organizations like the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension are valuable opportunities for education, community involvement, and mutual impact.
Food security and sustainability are important initiatives across both organizations: the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension has been a longtime partner of Cape Abilities Farm to address food security on Cape Cod, thanks in part to a subgrant from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR).
The collaboration has enabled Cape Abilities and individuals in our programs to assemble and deliver over 6,000 bags of fresh produce to families and individuals – demonstrating what it means to be an active participant in the enrichment of the community.
