In late October, our group had the privilege of immersing ourselves in the beauty of the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, where we partnered with Birdability for a truly unforgettable birding experience. This unique organization is dedicated to making birdwatching and enjoying nature accessible and inclusive for everyone, regardless of physical ability or other challenges.
Our day began with a fascinating close up look at bird banding. Volunteers meticulously recorded vital data on each bird’s feathers, weight, and overall health—a process that plays a key role in conservation efforts. Watching the care and precision that went into this work was inspiring. And the highlight? Each individual who wanted to participate had the opportunity to help release a bird back into the sanctuary. Feeling their feathers flutter (just like in the photo captured) just before they took flight created an unforgettable moment for all.
Our guide Michele, is an incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic leader, we explored the sanctuary further, with her telescope bringing the wonders of the wildlife up close. Through her lens, we spotted an array of creatures, from small birds off in the distance to turtles sunning themselves on rocks in the pond and crabs scuttling through the marsh.
We’re so grateful to Birdability and Michele for an incredible day and for showing us just how accessible and enriching birding can be. We look forward to more adventures that help make nature a welcoming space for all!
