As we continue celebrating 20 years of Cape Abilities Farm, we’re sharing the stories of the people who have grown alongside it.
Mike Rhodes is one of them.
Mike is one of the original farmers. For years, you could find him in the greenhouse, happily sweeping and taking pride in keeping things just right. If cherry tomatoes were in season, he was also known for helping with a little “quality control.”
Before COVID, Mike preferred sticking to what felt familiar. But during the pandemic, something shifted. When he returned to the Farm, staff quickly noticed a new confidence and sense of purpose.
They started calling him “Mikey 2.0.”
Mike began taking on new responsibilities including watering plants, sanitizing buckets, planting tomatoes, and unloading trucks. He became more flexible, more self-directed, and more confident in his ability to do more than he once thought possible.
For 20 years, Cape Abilities Farm has grown vegetables and flowers. But stories like Mike’s remind us what truly flourishes here: confidence, independence, friendship, and belonging.
